For years, the idea of the Internet of Things has been one of the tech industry’s hottest concepts. It’s a reality now. Hundreds of millions of devices are internet-enabled, talking to smartphones, central locations, laptops, and to each other. Billions more devices will go online in the next few years. As the automotive industry becomes increasingly defined by software and the reality of the connected car, these two worlds are converging. The automotive industry will be embracing the concept of the IoT in order to make cars that are even more responsive and exciting for consumers.

In an article for Embedded Computing, Movimento CTO Mahbubul Alam discusses the ways that the two industries are similar, what they can learn from each other, and some of the more interesting outcomes of this relationship, including the ultimate key fob—where the car adjusts to you, not the other way around. As OEMs design their cars to be more connected, they will need the comprehensive and secure OTA update capabilities to make sure their customers are always on the cutting edge.
